Scott Rogers*
Born 1961, Mesa, Arizona • Lives and works in Paradise, Utah
History runs deeply through the lineage of sculptor Scott Rogers. His ancestor John Rogers, his great-grandfather six generations removed, was martyred in 1555—burned at the stake for translating and printing one of the earliest English Bibles. Two additional forebears, Thomas Rogers and Samuel Fuller, signed the Mayflower Compact in Plymouth in 1620. Rogers’s great-great-grandfather, Henry Clay Rogers, joined the 1877 expedition that settled Lehi, Arizona—now present-day Mesa, where Scott was born. His uncle, Grant Speed, achieved prominence as a Western artist.
Rogers reflects on his artistic motivations:
“The feelings I portray I’ve had all my life. I remember fondly the hours, spent as a youth, reading of renegades, outlaws, wild men and horses—ferocity, passion, cunning, honor, loneliness, fear, and freedom. I enjoy depicting men and women who, unknowingly, found themselves in historical settings requiring courage. I sculpt for my art to be an instant conduit to a rich body of knowledge—anatomy, feelings, history, period clothing, and lore—while holding to traditional artistic values. I want viewers to feel like active participants in the events or times portrayed in my work.”
