Born in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, in 1957, Dean Mitchell now lives and works in Tampa, Florida. He is proficient in watercolor, egg tempera, oil, and pastel, and over his four-decade career has become widely recognized for his masterful figurative works, landscapes, and still lifes.
At age twenty-three, Mitchell became the youngest artist ever accepted into the National Watercolor Society; five years later, he was admitted into the American Watercolor Society. He has earned numerous gold medals from these and other prestigious painting organizations around the world. His awards number in the hundreds, and his work is held in museum, corporate, and private collections across the country.
His artistry has been praised by critics, including The New York Times writer Michael Kimmelman, who described Mitchell as a “modern-day Vermeer.”
