Collection: Walter Matia

Walter Matia
Walter Matia earned degrees in biology and art design from Williams College in Massachusetts. After graduation, he worked in the exhibits department at the Cleveland Museum of Natural History and for The Nature Conservancy. In 1984, he founded his own art studio, Curlew Castings.
Matia’s work reflects a deeply personal vision of the world around him. His sculptures are biographical in nature, serving as a diary of his experiences and observations, created with honesty and heart.
His works are held in prestigious collections, including the Leigh Yawkey Woodson Art Museum, Brookgreen Gardens, National Museum of Wildlife Art, Gilcrease Museum, Wichita Botanical Gardens, Cleveland Zoo and Cleveland Museum of Natural History, American Kennel Club Museum, NRG Stadium in Houston, and Blair House, the guest house of the U.S. president.
Matia has exhibited widely across the country. He is a Master Signature Member of the Society of Animal Artists, a Fellow of the National Sculpture Society, and recognized as a Master Wildlife Artist by the Leigh Yawkey Woodson Art Museum. He resides in Dickerson, Maryland, with his wife, daughter, son, and their dogs, Pip the Setter and Tink the Lab.
