Jan Mapes

The roots of Jan Mapes’ artistic career extend deep into her childhood, when her family’s love of the outdoors nurtured curiosity and creativity. Her mother taught her to appreciate the natural world and its creatures, exploring it fully—climbing trees, catching fireflies, and enjoying the rhythms of the changing seasons. Her grandfather introduced her to the life of a Southern cowman, inspiring a lasting passion for horses, cattle, and the Western way of life.

After moving to Colorado, Mapes found herself surrounded by horses and the sweeping landscapes of the West. The region’s shapes, colors, and movements captivated her, fueling her curiosity and shaping her artistic vision.

Mapes’ work is informed by a unique blend of art and science, which continues to inspire her passion for nature and the intricate patterns of creation. She approaches each subject with an understanding that nothing exists in isolation—every element is defined by its context. Her goal is to weave these components together in each painting and sculpture, creating a harmonious visual experience akin to a beautiful symphony or a perfectly composed meal.
