Collection: Kelsey, Greg
(b. 1971)
A self-taught artist, Greg Kelsey was born in 1971 and was raised in both Texas and Oklahoma. He currently resides in Ignacio, Colorado. Kelsey is a member of the National Sculpture Society and C.M. Russell Museum’s Skull Society of Artists.
An honest look at Kelsey’s sculpture reveals his intensity for both form and subject. No matter what is being portrayed, he believes that form is the most significant thing about a sculpture. Kelsey states, “It is a powerful combination when form and subject are both meaningful.” Melding sculptural form with powerful visions of Western history and modern-day cowboy living inspires Kelsey to create work. He feels strongly that the story of Western life is worth telling in an authentic way.
Kelsey has been honored with numerous awards including the Briscoe Western Art Museum’s Night of Artists 2015 Purchase Award and 2015 Committee’s Choice Award as well as the 2012 Committee’s Choice Award; the Eiteljorg Museum’s Quest for the West 2016, 2015 Cyrus Dallin Award for Best Sculpture and 2011 Purchase Award; and the C.M. Russell Museum’s Russell Fine Art Auction 2007 People’s Choice Award. Museums that hold Kelsey’s work in their permanent collections include the Briscoe Western Art Museum, the Eiteljorg Museum, and the C.M. Russell Museum. Kelsey is currently represented by the Legacy Galleries in Jackson, Wyoming, Bozeman, Montana, and Scottsdale, Arizona; Settlers West Gallery in Tucson, Arizona; and Sorrel Sky Gallery in Durango, Colorado and Santa Fe, New Mexico.
