Collection: Blair Buswell

Blair Buswell*

Blair Buswell has always been captivated by the human figure, focusing on gesture, mood, and expression to bring a sense of life to his sculptures. His interest in the athletic form has led to depictions of many prominent sports figures, including Jack Nicklaus, Oscar Robertson, Doak Walker, and Paul “Bear” Bryant. Since 1983, he has sculpted more than 130 portrait busts for the Pro Football Hall of Fame—an extraordinary achievement that helped earn him the United States Sports Academy’s Sport Artist of the Year Award in 1990, the first sculptor to receive the honor.

Buswell’s work encompasses a wide range of subjects and scales, appearing in museums, private collections, campuses, sports venues, and galleries across the country. His public monuments include Mickey Mantle in Oklahoma City; Charlton Heston at the National Heritage Museum; a larger-than-life figure of Merlin Olsen at Utah State University; and a twice-life-size sculpture of General Robert Neyland at the University of Tennessee. Additional notable works include an eight-foot sculpture of Coach John Wooden at UCLA’s Pauley Pavilion (2012) and an eight-foot monument to filmmaker Warren Miller installed at the Yellowstone Club in Big Sky, Montana (2022).

A member of the Prix de West, a founding member of the Northwest Rendezvous Group, and a Fellow of the National Sculpture Society, Buswell is widely respected for his versatility and technical mastery. He continues to expand his skills through ambitious large-scale projects, most notably a monumental series created with Ed Fraughton and Kent Ullberg for downtown Omaha. Beginning with a one-block-long wagon train completed in 2009, the project has grown to include Native Americans, mountain men, and a handcart family, with work continuing through 2027.

Rooted in traditional training yet continually evolving, Buswell embraces each new challenge as an opportunity to deepen his craft and celebrate the enduring spirit of the American West.
